Overview

Lynestrenol is a synthetic progestin (progestogen) used primarily for contraception and the treatment of menstrual disorders. It acts as a prodrug, being rapidly converted in the liver to norethisterone, its active metabolite, which is a potent agonist of the progesterone receptor. Lynestrenol itself does not bind directly to the progesterone receptor but exerts its effects through norethisterone. Its main clinical uses include oral contraception (alone or with estrogen), management of menstrual cycle irregularities, endometriosis treatment, and hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women. The contraceptive effect is achieved mainly by increasing cervical mucus viscosity to inhibit sperm penetration and by suppressing ovulation[1][2][3][5][6].
