Overview
**Lynestrenol + ethinylestradiol** is a fixed-dose combination of two hormonal agents: lynestrenol, a progestin, and ethinylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen. It is used primarily as a combined oral contraceptive. Lynestrenol is a prodrug of norethisterone, exhibiting its effects by binding to progesterone receptors and exerting a central action on the pituitary to inhibit ovulation, along with peripheral effects on the endometrium and ovaries. Ethinylestradiol acts as an agonist of the estrogen receptor, suppresses gonadotrophin secretion, and modifies cervical mucus and endometrial development to further inhibit conception. The combination inhibits ovulation, changes the endometrial lining to prevent implantation, and affects cervical mucus consistency to impede sperm penetration. The combination has been marketed as Lyndiol and similar branded oral contraceptives, especially in Europe[1][2][4].
