Lyophilised plasma is a freeze-dried blood product derived from human plasma, designed for rapid reconstitution and use in emergency medical settings. Developed by the Red Cross of Upper Austria (Blutzentrale Linz) in collaboration with Johannes Kepler University Linz, this specific formulation is primarily indicated for the treatment of haemorrhagic shock and trauma-induced coagulopathy. Unlike fresh frozen plasma (FFP), lyophilised plasma can be stored at room temperature and does not require a cold chain, making it highly suitable for pre-hospital, remote, and military trauma care. It contains a full complement of human coagulation factors, albumin, and other plasma proteins, which work to restore blood volume and promote haemostasis. The product undergoes pathogen inactivation (typically using solvent/detergent treatment) to ensure safety and is reconstituted with sterile water immediately before intravenous administration.
