Lyophilized exosomes are cell-derived extracellular vesicles being investigated by the Instituto de Oftalmología Fundación Conde de Valenciana for the treatment of facial skin aging. Exosomes function as mediators of intercellular communication, carrying a cargo of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids that can modulate biological processes in target cells. In this therapeutic application, the lyophilized exosomes are reconstituted and applied topically to the face, followed by the use of a microneedling device. The microneedling creates micro-channels in the skin to facilitate the penetration of the exosomes into the dermal layers, where they are intended to stimulate regenerative signaling, promote collagen synthesis, and reverse clinical signs of dermal aging.
