Overview

Lysimachia christinae is a perennial herb from the Primulaceae family, widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The dried aerial parts of the plant are harvested and processed for medicinal use. It is primarily indicated for conditions such as jaundice (especially damp-heat jaundice), hepatitis, gallbladder disorders (including gallstones), urinary tract infections and calculi, painful urination (stranguria), edema, carbuncles and furuncles, as well as snake and insect bites[2][3][5]. Pharmacological studies have shown that extracts of Lysimachia christinae possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial[8], diuretic[2], hepatoprotective[3], and anticancer properties—particularly by promoting apoptosis and inhibiting proliferation in breast cancer cells through modulation of pathways involving poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), Bcl-2 family proteins, Akt phosphorylation status, p53 activation, epithelial–mesenchymal transition markers such as E-cadherin/vimentin[4]. The main bioactive constituents include flavonoids like rutin (the major component identified in extracts), homo-orientin, isoschaftoside, schaftoside and vitexin[4][6]. In animal models it has also been shown to prevent cholesterol gallstone formation by affecting intestinal metabolism pathways[7].
