Lysine acetylsalicylate is a water-soluble salt of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and the amino acid lysine. It acts as a non-selective, irreversible inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2. By acetylating a serine residue in the active site of these enzymes, it prevents the conversion of arachidonic acid into thromboxane A2 (a potent platelet aggregator) and various inflammatory prostaglandins. This formulation is particularly noted for its high solubility, allowing for rapid absorption and administration via oral, intravenous, or intramuscular routes. In clinical research conducted by Azienda Ospedaliera San Giovanni Battista, lysine acetylsalicylate was specifically investigated for its potential to overcome 'aspirin resistance' in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition where standard oral aspirin therapy may fail to achieve adequate platelet inhibition.
