Overview

Lysine chloride is an investigational sodium-free chloride supplement being developed by Yale University for the treatment of heart failure, particularly in patients with hypochloremia and diuretic resistance. It consists of the essential amino acid L-lysine paired with a chloride ion, allowing for the delivery of supplemental chloride without the co-administration of sodium. By replenishing chloride levels, the compound is hypothesized to modulate renal salt sensing and neurohormonal activation (such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system), thereby improving diuretic responsiveness and volume status. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials (e.g., NCT03440970) as an oral therapy.
