Lysozyme is a naturally occurring antimicrobial enzyme and protein found in various body fluids such as tears, saliva, mucus, and sweat. It plays a key role in the innate immune system by hydrolyzing glycosidic bonds in peptidoglycans of bacterial cell walls—especially those of Gram-positive bacteria—leading to cell lysis and death[1][3][4]. Lysozyme also exhibits antiviral and antifungal activities and has immunomodulatory effects by influencing inflammatory cytokine production[2][6]. Clinically, it is used as an anti-inflammatory agent for conditions like oral ulcers, throat infections, chronic sinusitis, minor bleeding during surgery, phlegm production disorders (e.g., chronic bronchitis), gastrointestinal disorders in infants (including diarrhea), herpes simplex/zoster co-adjuvant therapy (in some countries), and supportive care for immune function[4][5][7][8]. It is available as tablets or topical preparations; typical adult doses are 90 mg per dose two to three times daily or higher depending on indication[2][5]. Lysozyme has been approved for medical use mainly in France, Italy, Latvia; elsewhere it may be considered investigational or used as a supplement[8].
