Overview

Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Lythraceae family. Traditionally used in European and Asian herbal medicine for centuries[4], its main medicinal applications include treatment of gastrointestinal tract ailments such as diarrhea and dysentery[1][3][4]. The plant contains polyphenols (notably C-glucosidic ellagitannins and flavonoids), tannins (especially the compound salicarin), anthocyanins and other phytochemicals that contribute to its pharmacological effects including antidiarrheal[1][4], antimicrobial[1][5], antifungal[2][5], anti-inflammatory[1][3][4], antioxidant[1][4] and astringent actions. It has also been used topically for skin conditions like eczema or wounds; as a styptic for bleeding; for varicose veins and hemorrhoids; as well as in traditional remedies for menstrual problems and mouth/throat sores. Modern research supports some of these activities but robust clinical evidence is lacking.[3][4]
