Overview

Lytomed is an oral rehydration solution (ORS) developed for the management of fluid and electrolyte loss, particularly in pediatric patients suffering from acute gastroenteritis. It contains a specific balance of glucose and electrolytes, including sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium citrate. The mechanism of action relies on the sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) in the small intestine, where the presence of glucose enhances the absorption of sodium and water, effectively counteracting dehydration. Lytomed has been the subject of clinical research at the Medical University of Graz, where its efficacy and metabolic impact were compared to other standard rehydration solutions like Normolyt in hospitalized children.
