Overview
m-OPV2 (monovalent oral poliovirus vaccine type 2) is a live-attenuated vaccine containing the Sabin strain of type 2 poliovirus. While trivalent oral poliovirus vaccines (t-OPV) have been phased out globally to prevent the emergence of vaccine-derived polioviruses, m-OPV2 remains a critical tool for outbreak response and clinical research. In the context of studies led by Vaxtrials S.A., m-OPV2 is utilized as a challenge agent in Phase II trials to evaluate the mucosal (intestinal) immunity conferred by new inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) candidates, such as high-dose monovalent IPV2 (m-IPV2 HD). By administering a challenge dose of m-OPV2 and measuring subsequent viral shedding in stool samples, researchers can assess the ability of primary IPV immunization to prevent poliovirus replication and transmission.
