M121101 is a topical nail-softening agent currently in Phase III clinical development by Maruho Co., Ltd. for the treatment of pincer nail deformity (also known as involutional nail). Pincer nail is a condition characterized by excessive transverse curvature of the nail plate, which can lead to significant pain, inflammation, and functional impairment. M121101 is designed to be used as a chemical pretreatment in combination with mechanical overcurvature-correcting devices. By chemically softening the keratinized structure of the nail plate, the agent increases nail flexibility, facilitating the mechanical straightening process and reducing the risk of nail cracking or patient discomfort during the procedure. As of 2024, the drug is being evaluated in multi-center clinical trials in Japan to assess its efficacy in improving nail width correction and its overall safety profile.
