Overview

Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang is a classical Chinese herbal formula composed of four main ingredients: Ephedra stem (Ma Huang), Gypsum (Shi Gao), Apricot kernel (Xing Ren), and Honey-fried Licorice root (Zhi Gan Cao)[1][6]. It was first described in the ancient text "On Cold Damage" (Shang Han Lun) around 220 AD[1][6]. The formula is traditionally used to clear heat from the lungs, facilitate the flow of Lung Qi, stop cough and wheezing by directing rebellious Qi downward[1][4][6]. Its primary indications include symptoms such as high fever with or without sweating, thirst with dry throat, cough with thin yellow sputum or labored breathing/wheezing—often associated with conditions like upper respiratory tract infections and pneumonia[1][3][6]. Modern research has shown that Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang exhibits antibacterial activity against pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae by targeting pneumolysin—a key virulence factor—suggesting a mechanism involving inhibition of bacterial toxins in addition to its traditional anti-inflammatory effects[3]. The formula is sometimes used for bronchial asthma and other lung heat syndromes in both adults and children[6].
