Overview

MA7 is a synthetic small molecule derivative of Psammaplin A (PsA) that acts as a radiosensitizer. Developed by researchers at Seoul National University and the Catholic University of Daegu, MA7 was designed to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy in cancer treatment. In preclinical studies using A549 lung cancer and U373MG glioblastoma cell lines, MA7 significantly increased radiation-induced cell death. Unlike its parent compound Psammaplin A, which is a known DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitor, MA7 does not demonstrate inhibitory activity against DNMT1, suggesting a different or currently unidentified mechanism of action for its radiosensitizing effects. Despite its potential, MA7 faces challenges regarding chemical stability, with a reported degradation half-life of less than 10 minutes in mouse serum, necessitating further structural optimization for in vivo applications.
