MaaT-033 is an oral, donor-derived Microbiome Ecosystem Therapy™ being developed by MaaT Pharma. It is a standardized, high-richness, and high-diversity product created using a "pooling" technology that combines donations from multiple healthy donors. The therapy, formulated as a delayed-release capsule, contains a group of anti-inflammatory bacterial species known as Butycore™. The proposed mechanism involves restoring the gut microbiome's diversity and function, which in turn is believed to modulate the immune system. MaaT-033 has been investigated as an adjunctive therapy to improve survival in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) for blood cancers and has also shown potential in slowing disease progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) by targeting the gut-brain axis. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has granted it Orphan Drug Designation for its use in allo-HSCT.
