Drug intelligence / Profile preview
mAb 826827 (also known as humAb 826827) is a human monoclonal antibody targeting the apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) of *Plasmodium vivax* (PvAMA1). Developed by researchers at Case Western Reserve University, the antibody was isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of a *P. vivax*-exposed individual. PvAMA1 is an essential parasite protein involved in both sporozoite invasion of hepatocytes and merozoite invasion of reticulocytes. mAb 826827 binds to a highly conserved hydrophobic groove in PvAMA1, blocking its interaction with the rhoptry neck protein 2 (RON2) receptor. This mechanism enables the antibody to inhibit both pre-erythrocytic (liver) and erythrocytic (blood) stages of *P. vivax* infection, making it a potential therapeutic candidate for the prevention and treatment of vivax malaria.
