Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mabuterol is a long acting, selective β2-adrenoreceptor agonist and bronchodilator used primarily for the treatment of respiratory disorders such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It acts by stimulating β2-adrenoceptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to activation of adenylyl cyclase, increased cyclic AMP levels, and subsequent relaxation of airway smooth muscle. This results in bronchodilation and improved airflow. The R-enantiomer is more potent than the S-enantiomer. At higher concentrations, mabuterol may also antagonize beta1 adrenoceptors[4][5][10].
