Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Maca (Lepidium meyenii), also known as Peruvian ginseng, is an herbaceous biennial plant native to the high Andes of Peru. It is widely used as a dietary supplement and adaptogen to enhance energy, stamina, athletic performance, libido, and fertility, as well as to alleviate menopausal symptoms. Maca contains various bioactive compounds, including macamides, macaenes, glucosinolates, and alkaloids. Its mechanisms of action are not fully elucidated but are believed to involve modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, regulation of neurotransmitters (such as serotonin and dopamine) via the endocannabinoid system (specifically through macamides acting on cannabinoid CB1 receptors), and antioxidant activity, without directly altering serum reproductive hormone levels.
