Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Macrocarpal B is a natural phloroglucinol-sesquiterpene adduct isolated from *Eucalyptus* species, such as *Eucalyptus globulus* and *Eucalyptus macrocarpa*. It has historically been studied for its antibacterial properties against pathogens like methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) and those causing periodontal disease. More recently, researchers at Peking University identified macrocarpal B as a potent small-molecule inhibitor of the interaction between the M-type phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) and anti-PLA2R autoantibodies, which are key drivers of primary membranous nephropathy (MN). By binding directly to PLA2R, macrocarpal B prevents autoantibody binding and mitigates podocyte injury, representing a novel therapeutic candidate for the treatment of membranous nephropathy.
