This combination drug consists of a polyethylene glycol (macrogol) based osmotic laxative, a balanced electrolyte solution (including sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium hydrogen carbonate), and the anti-foaming agent simeticone. Developed and studied by researchers at Odense University Hospital, this specific combination is used to prevent or treat postoperative constipation, particularly in elderly patients following hip fracture surgery. The macrogol and sodium sulfate components work by retaining water in the bowel through osmosis, thereby increasing stool volume and stimulating peristalsis. The electrolytes are included to ensure that the large volume of fluid does not cause significant shifts in the patient's systemic electrolyte balance. Simeticone is added to reduce the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, alleviating bloating and discomfort often associated with constipation and the use of osmotic laxatives.
