Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Macrogol with Electrolytes is an osmotic laxative combination used for the treatment of chronic constipation and fecal impaction, as well as for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy or surgery. The primary active component, macrogol (polyethylene glycol), is a high-molecular-weight polymer that is virtually unabsorbed by the gastrointestinal tract. It acts osmotically by binding water molecules in the intestinal lumen, thereby increasing stool volume, softening feces, and stimulating neuromuscular colonic propulsion. The inclusion of essential electrolytes—sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and potassium chloride—helps prevent clinically significant shifts in fluid and electrolyte balance during bowel evacuation. Originally developed by Norgine under the brand name Movicol, this combination is widely available as a generic over-the-counter and prescription medication globally, including formulations sponsored by Arrotex Pharmaceuticals (under the Apohealth brand) in Australia.
