Overview
Macroplastique is an injectable urethral bulking agent composed of textured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer particles suspended in a water-soluble polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) carrier gel. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) resulting from intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD). Upon injection into the urethral submucosa, the PVP carrier is absorbed and excreted by the body, while the permanent silicone particles remain in place to provide long-term tissue bulk. This physical augmentation increases urethral closure pressure and improves the ability of the urethra to prevent involuntary urine leakage. Developed by Uroplasty (now Laborie Medical), it has been used globally since 1991 and received FDA approval in 2006.
