Overview

Mafenide is a sulfonamide-type topical antibiotic primarily used to prevent and treat bacterial infections in patients with second- and third-degree burns. It is most commonly applied as a cream or solution directly to the affected skin areas. Mafenide acts by reducing the bacterial population in avascular burn tissue, thereby lowering infection risk and promoting healing of deep partial-thickness burns. While its precise mechanism of action is not fully understood, it is known to inhibit several human carbonic anhydrase isoforms after being metabolized, which may contribute to its effects. Mafenide was first approved by the FDA in 1948 and remains an important adjunctive therapy for burn wound management[1][2][3][4][5].
