Overview

MAG-HSV1716 is a preclinical-stage magnetized oncolytic virus therapy developed by the University of Sheffield in collaboration with Virttu Biologics. It consists of the oncolytic herpes simplex virus strain 1716 (HSV1716) co-assembled via electrostatic interactions with biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles (MAG) derived from the magnetotactic bacterium *Magnetospirillum magneticum* (AMB-1). This magnetization shields the virus from neutralizing antibodies in the circulation and, when combined with external magnetic guidance, enhances systemic delivery and tumor targeting. Upon reaching the tumor, MAG-HSV1716 selectively infects and lyses cancer cells, inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD) and promoting antitumor immunity. It is being investigated for the treatment of solid tumors, particularly breast cancer.
