magaldrate

Magaldrate is an antacid composed of magnesium and aluminum hydroxides. It is used to relieve symptoms associated with excess stomach acid such as heartburn (acid reflux), indigestion (dyspepsia), sour stomach and upset stomach. It is also indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers), esophagitis and hyperphosphatemia. The drug works by neutralizing gastric acid in the stomach; it reacts rapidly with hydrochloric acid to form water and other neutral compounds. The combination of rapid-acting magnesium hydroxide and slow-acting aluminum hydroxide provides both immediate relief and sustained action against acidity. Aluminum’s constipating effect is balanced by the laxative effect of magnesium[1][2][3][4][5][7]. Magaldrate has been discontinued in some markets including the United States but remains available internationally under various brand names[4][6].
