Magellan Bio-Bandage is an autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) gel therapy developed by Arteriocyte (now Isto Biologics) for the treatment of thermal burn wounds. The therapy is produced at the bedside by processing a patient's own blood using the Magellan Autologous Platelet Separator System to create a concentrated fraction of platelets and bioactive growth factors. When applied topically to acute deep partial thickness thermal burns, the gel releases a cocktail of growth factors—including PDGF, VEGF, and TGF-beta—that stimulate wound healing pathways. These pathways promote angiogenesis, accelerate tissue regeneration, and recruit keratinocytes to facilitate re-epithelialization. The product was notably supported by a significant BARDA contract for the development of treatments for thermal and radiation injuries and was evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial as an adjunctive therapy for skin grafting.
