Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Maggot extract (ME), also known as 'Wu Gu Chong' in traditional Chinese medicine, is a biological substance derived from fly larvae. It is being researched for its potential anti-cancer properties, specifically in gastric and ovarian cancers. The extract demonstrates the ability to inhibit tumor growth and metastasis by suppressing the proliferation and migration of cancer cells while promoting apoptosis. Mechanistically, ME acts by inhibiting the overexpression of heat shock protein 90 alpha family class B member 1 (HSP90AB1), which subsequently reduces the levels of oncogenic factors like MYC and insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) and increases the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins such as caspase-3 and BAX.
