Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnacet is a combination analgesic consisting of oxycodone hydrochloride and acetaminophen. Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid agonist that targets mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system to inhibit ascending pain pathways and alter the perception of pain. Acetaminophen is a non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic that is believed to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, primarily within the central nervous system, thereby increasing the pain threshold. This combination is indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain. Originally marketed by Victory Pharma, the product was acquired by Shionogi in 2011; however, the Magnacet brand has since been discontinued in the United States, although generic equivalents remain available.
