Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnesium is an essential mineral and electrolyte crucial for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body, regulating diverse biochemical processes including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. It plays a vital role in maintaining normal bone structure, cardiac excitability, neuromuscular conduction, and cellular energy production. Therapeutically, magnesium acts through multiple mechanisms, primarily as an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, a natural calcium channel blocker, and a regulator of cellular signaling. These actions contribute to its use in various medical conditions, such as preventing and treating seizures in eclampsia and pre-eclampsia, managing certain arrhythmias, alleviating constipation, and as an antacid for indigestion. It is widely available as a dietary supplement to address deficiencies and is also used in pharmaceutical preparations.
