Magnesium and potassium are essential electrolytes that work synergistically to maintain cellular membrane potential, particularly within cardiac and skeletal muscle tissues. Magnesium acts as a critical cofactor for the sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na+/K+-ATPase) pump, which actively transports potassium into cells and sodium out, thereby maintaining the electrochemical gradient necessary for nerve impulse conduction and muscle contraction. Furthermore, magnesium serves as a physiological calcium antagonist, regulating the flow of calcium into cells and preventing over-excitation. This combination is frequently utilized as an adjuvant therapy in cardiovascular conditions such as arrhythmias, heart failure, and hypertension, as well as for the prevention and treatment of electrolyte imbalances caused by diuretic use, chronic disease, or strenuous physical activity. The combination is often administered as aspartate or citrate salts to enhance bioavailability and cellular uptake.
