Magnesium acetate is the magnesium salt of acetic acid and exists in both anhydrous and hydrated forms, most commonly as magnesium acetate tetrahydrate. It is a highly water-soluble ionic compound used primarily for electrolyte replenishment and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) therapy[1][5]. Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in numerous biochemical processes including ATP production and enzyme activity. Magnesium acetate serves as a source of water and electrolytes when combined with dextrose or other salts for intravenous infusions, particularly in patients with carbohydrate or magnesium deficiency, insulin hypoglycemia, constipation (especially when used with aluminum salts), or hypertension during pregnancy[1][4]. In addition to its medical uses, it also finds applications as a dietary supplement and stabilizing agent in dialysis solutions[8]. The mechanism of action involves providing bioavailable magnesium ions that are critical for normal cellular function.
