Magnesium alginate is a polysaccharide salt derived from alginic acid, which is extracted from brown seaweed (algae). It functions primarily as an anti-reflux agent and mucosal protectant. Upon contact with gastric acid, magnesium alginate reacts to form a low-density, pH-neutral viscous gel, commonly referred to as a "raft," that floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a physical, mechanical barrier to prevent the reflux of acid, pepsin, and bile into the esophagus and larynx. Beyond its antireflux properties, magnesium alginate exhibits mucoadhesive characteristics, forming a protective film over the esophageal and pharyngeal mucosa to protect against chemical injury and promote tissue regeneration. It is widely used in the management of **gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)** and **laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR)**, and is frequently employed in pediatric populations for infant regurgitation due to its non-systemic safety profile. It is often regulated as a Class IIa medical device in the European Union and may be formulated as oral suspensions, tablets, or topical ophthalmic drops.
