Magnesium beta-hydroxybutyrate is a *synthetic salt* combining the mineral magnesium with beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a ketone body. BHB is produced endogenously during periods of low carbohydrate intake or fasting and acts as an alternative energy substrate, especially for the brain and muscle.
