Magnesium carbonate is an inorganic compound used primarily as a mineral supplement and antacid. It is indicated for the prevention and treatment of low magnesium levels in the blood (hypomagnesemia) and for symptomatic relief of heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, or other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. As an antacid, it works by neutralizing gastric hydrochloric acid through a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide and magnesium chloride. Magnesium is essential for normal cellular function including nerve transmission, muscle contraction/relaxation (including cardiac muscle), bone health, and enzymatic reactions[2][3][4]. Magnesium carbonate is available over-the-counter in various formulations. As an antacid, it works by neutralizing gastric hydrochloric acid. It also acts as a glutamate (NMDA) receptor blocker.
