Magnesium chloride is an inorganic salt composed of one magnesium atom and two chloride atoms (MgCl2). It is a highly soluble form of magnesium, used both as a dietary supplement and as a pharmaceutical agent to treat or prevent magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is essential for numerous physiological processes, including muscle and nerve function, regulation of blood pressure and blood sugar levels, protein synthesis, bone health, DNA production, and enzymatic activity. Magnesium chloride can be administered orally (as tablets or solution), intravenously (injection), or topically. It is more bioavailable than some other forms of supplemental magnesium due to its high solubility in water. Clinically, it is indicated for electrolyte replenishment in cases of hypomagnesemia (magnesium deficiency) and may also be used in dialysis fluids or to treat mild metabolic acidosis. Magnesium supplementation has been studied for potential benefits in hypertension, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis prevention/treatment, migraine prophylaxis, constipation relief (by increasing intestinal water content), lipid profile improvement (raising HDL cholesterol), and supporting heart health[1][3][4][6].
