Magnesium chloride + sodium acetate + potassium chloride + sodium chloride + sodium gluconate is a **balanced isotonic crystalloid electrolyte solution** used as an intravenous fluid replacement product and, in closely related presentation-specific products, as a sterile irrigation solution. It is marketed most notably as **Plasma-Lyte A** for injection and **Physiosol/Physiolyte** for irrigation. The combination supplies sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate in physiologically balanced concentrations, thereby restoring extracellular fluid volume and electrolyte composition while also providing an **alkalinizing effect** because acetate and gluconate are metabolized to bicarbonate. Clinically it is used as a source of water and electrolytes, for hydration and prevention or treatment of dehydration and electrolyte disturbances, and for general irrigation, washing, and rinsing depending on formulation. It is a **small-molecule electrolyte combination product**, not a biologic, and has been developed/manufactured by companies including Baxter and Abbott, with Hospira-associated irrigation products also cited in public labeling context.
