Dextrose serves as the principal osmotic agent that promotes ultrafiltration across the peritoneal membrane, while sodium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and lactate help maintain electrolyte and acid-base balance during dialysis exchanges. The therapeutic effect is achieved locally within the peritoneal cavity through solute and fluid exchange across the peritoneal membrane rather than through a discrete receptor-mediated pharmacology.
