Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnesium chloride + calcium chloride + sodium lactate + sodium chloride + dextrose monohydrate is a multi-component **peritoneal dialysis solution** marketed as **DELFLEX** for patients with chronic kidney failure who are maintained on peritoneal dialysis, and it is also used in the setting of acute renal failure. It is administered **intraperitoneally** as a sterile hypertonic electrolyte and carbohydrate solution in single-dose flexible bags. **Dextrose monohydrate** provides the osmotic gradient that drives ultrafiltration and fluid removal across the peritoneal membrane, **sodium lactate** serves as an alkalinizing buffer to help correct acid-base abnormalities, and **sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride** help maintain dialysate electrolyte composition and support correction of electrolyte disturbances. The product acts through a **physical osmotic and electrolyte replacement mechanism rather than a discrete receptor or enzyme target**. It has been developed, manufactured, and marketed by **Fresenius Medical Care**, with U.S. approval dating to the 1980s.
