Overview

Isolyte S (Multi-Electrolyte Injection) is an FDA-approved intravenous solution developed by B. Braun Medical Inc. It is a sterile, nonpyrogenic multi-electrolyte solution containing magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium acetate, sodium chloride, and sodium gluconate. Indicated for use in both adult and pediatric patients, it serves as a source of electrolytes and water for hydration and acts as an alkalinizing agent. The solution's electrolyte composition is designed to support various physiological functions: sodium regulates water distribution and osmotic pressure; potassium is essential for nerve conduction and muscle contraction; magnesium acts as a cofactor for numerous intracellular enzymatic reactions; and chloride, acetate, and gluconate contribute to maintaining acid-base balance. The acetate and gluconate components are metabolized to bicarbonate, providing the solution's alkalinizing effect.
