Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A sterile, nonpyrogenic **balanced crystalloid electrolyte solution** containing magnesium chloride, sodium acetate anhydrous, sodium gluconate, and sodium chloride, marketed as **Normosol-R**. It is used for **replacement of acute extracellular fluid volume losses** and as an adjunct to restore circulating volume in settings such as **surgery, trauma, burns, shock, and moderate blood loss**. Its pharmacologic effect is not receptor-mediated; rather, it acts by **expanding the extracellular/intravascular fluid compartment and replacing physiologic electrolytes**. Acetate and gluconate function as metabolizable anions that help maintain a near-physiologic acid-base profile compared with unbalanced saline solutions. The product is also used as a compatible **priming solution for blood administration sets** and as a **diluent for packed red blood cell transfusion**.
