Drug intelligence / Profile preview
magnesium chloride + sodium gluconate + potassium chloride + sodium acetate + sodium hydroxide is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic intravenous balanced crystalloid electrolyte formulation marketed as **Plasma-Lyte A**. It is a fixed combination of electrolyte salts used to replace extracellular fluid and maintain acid-base and electrolyte homeostasis in settings such as acute extracellular fluid volume loss, moderate blood loss, and shock. Its pharmacologic action is not through a discrete receptor or enzyme target; rather, it restores intravascular and extracellular fluid volume while supplying sodium, potassium, magnesium, acetate, and gluconate, with acetate serving as a bicarbonate precursor that helps support buffering. The product is a small-molecule electrolyte injection developed and manufactured by Baxter for intravenous fluid resuscitation and replacement.
