Overview

Magnesium citrate + probiotic is a combination dietary supplement containing magnesium citrate, an osmotic laxative and magnesium source, and one or more probiotic strains (commonly from the genera Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium). Magnesium citrate works by drawing water into the intestines to promote bowel movements and is also used to supplement dietary magnesium for muscle, nerve, and bone health. Probiotics are live microorganisms that can confer health benefits by modulating gut microbiota, supporting intestinal barrier function, reducing inflammation, and potentially improving gastrointestinal symptoms. This combination is marketed for digestive support, constipation relief, gut health maintenance, and sometimes adjunctive support in conditions like obesity or mood disorders. The mechanism of action involves both the laxative effect of magnesium citrate (increasing intestinal water content) and the modulation of gut flora by probiotics (suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6/IL-17; promoting tight junction proteins like Zo-1)[2][5]. There are no known clinically significant interactions between these two components[1][3].
