Magnesium EDTA is a chelated compound consisting of magnesium bound to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), typically in its disodium salt form. It acts as a potent chelating agent, binding tightly to metal ions such as magnesium, which enhances magnesium’s water solubility and bioavailability. This compound is used to correct magnesium deficiencies in agriculture, animal nutrition, and human supplements. It is also applied as a chelator in industrial applications and occasionally as a pharmaceutical agent to counteract specific heavy metal poisonings by promoting the excretion of metal ions. Its mechanism is based on the high-affinity complex formation of EDTA with metal cations, preventing them from participating in unwanted chemical or biological reactions[2][4][8].
