Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnesium gluconate is a mineral supplement used to prevent and treat low levels of magnesium in the blood (hypomagnesemia). Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. It plays a critical role in energy production (oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis), maintenance of normal cellular membrane potential by competing with calcium for binding sites on cell membranes and stimulating calcium sequestration by the sarcoplasmic reticulum. This helps maintain low resting intracellular free calcium ion concentration necessary for various cellular functions. Magnesium gluconate is often preferred as a supplement due to its high bioavailability among magnesium salts[1][3][4][8].
