Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate is the magnesium salt form of isoglycyrrhizinate, a derivative of glycyrrhizic acid extracted from the roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice). It exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and hepatoprotective activities. The drug acts as a free radical scavenger and modulates hepatic enzyme activity. It has been widely used in China for the treatment of various liver diseases including viral hepatitis, drug-induced hepatitis (notably anti-tuberculosis drug-induced liver injury), alcoholic hepatitis, and liver fibrosis. Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate also shows protective effects on other organs such as kidney, heart, lung, and brain in preclinical studies. Its mechanism involves inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation—possibly through blocking NF-κB signaling pathways—and regulation of apoptosis-related proteins[1][2][3][4][5][7].
