Magnesium l-aspartate hydrochloride trihydrate is a highly bioavailable organic magnesium salt used for the prevention and treatment of magnesium deficiency. In clinical settings, particularly at the Henry Dunant Hospital Center, it has been investigated for its efficacy in mitigating postoperative hypocalcemia and hypoparathyroidism following total thyroidectomy. Magnesium serves as an essential cofactor for the enzyme adenylate cyclase within parathyroid cells, which is required for the synthesis and secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Furthermore, magnesium is necessary for the peripheral action of PTH on target organs such as the kidneys and bones. By maintaining adequate serum magnesium levels, this compound helps prevent functional hypoparathyroidism and stabilizes calcium homeostasis in patients undergoing neck surgery.
