Overview

Magnesium levulinate is the magnesium salt of levulinic acid and is used as a mineral supplement to treat or prevent magnesium deficiency. It is classified as a nutraceutical and small molecule. Magnesium plays an essential role in numerous physiological processes, including enzyme function and energy metabolism. In some cases of congenital non-spherocytic haemolytic anaemia (CNSHA) with pyruvate kinase deficiency, administration of magnesium levulinate has been shown to increase pyruvate kinase activity by stimulating deficient ATPase activity in erythrocytes[1][3][4]. The compound dissociates to provide bioavailable magnesium ions after administration.
