Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnesium oxide is an inorganic compound used primarily as a dietary supplement to treat or prevent low levels of magnesium in the body. It is also commonly used as an antacid for relief of heartburn and acid indigestion and as a short-term osmotic laxative for constipation. Magnesium is essential for normal nerve function, muscle contraction (including cardiac muscle), enzyme activity (over 300 enzymatic processes), and maintaining electrolyte balance. As a laxative and antacid agent taken orally in tablet or capsule form, it works by drawing water into the intestines to stimulate bowel movements and neutralizing stomach acid. In migraine prevention therapy—especially in patients with low serum magnesium—it may help reduce headache frequency by modulating neurotransmitter release and vascular tone[1][2][3][4][5][6][8][9].
