Magnesium phosphate nanocrystal gel is an experimental topical hydrogel composed of two-dimensional magnesium phosphate nanocrystals. It is being investigated as an adjunct to mechanical debridement for the treatment of peri-implant mucositis, an inflammatory condition affecting the soft tissues around dental implants. The gel is designed to decontaminate the implant surface by disrupting bacterial biofilms, which are the primary cause of the inflammation. By facilitating the removal of these biofilms and potentially providing a biocompatible environment for tissue healing, the gel aims to reduce clinical signs of inflammation, such as bleeding on probing. The development is currently being evaluated in a randomized pilot clinical trial sponsored by Nancy Mouradian.
