magnesium sulfate

Magnesium sulfate is an inorganic salt used as a medication and supplement. It is primarily indicated for the treatment and prevention of low blood magnesium (hypomagnesemia), control of seizures in pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, management of acute nephritis in children, as a laxative for short-term relief of constipation, and as a soaking solution to relieve minor sprains, bruises, muscle aches or discomfort. Mechanistically, it acts by reducing acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction—thereby decreasing striated muscle contractions—and by direct inhibition of action potentials in myometrial muscle cells. It also plays an essential role in many enzyme systems involved with neurochemical transmission and muscular excitability[1][3][5][6].
